Better players tend to want the meta to always be shotgun, hand cannon and sniper. Bungie has gone along with this for much of D1 and D2. We've had hand cannon replaced with other primaries, but other than at the end of D2 we've about always had sniper and shotgun in the meta. Remember that they've messed with shotguns a lot over the years. Typically if they take 1 meter, or 1/2 meter off, that just means that with how fast our characters move, the CQC battles then involve getting closer for a fraction of a second. Maybe the only way they ever really reduced shotgun use was by taking away special ammo at the end of D1. This pretty much forced us to use sidearms. I don't hear the masses shouting that we want only sidearms to spawn with ammo, so you may want to get used to shotguns always being used a lot.

    Some valid points. I do think they're pandering to a set crowd not necessarily better players, but those accustomed to Handcannon, Sniper and Shotgun and are vocal enough reactionaries. Here, for my money, is abundant evidence of unequal treatment that has sustained them. Fusions were unquestionably disproportionately treated. Snipers, perhaps surprisingly have had some nerfs here (to what effect and for how long remains uncertain). Shotguns have just received the biggest boon yet in the form of a subclass-universal blink exotic for Hunter and are otherwise left untouched. Of course it is not just the higher ranges, as you mention, but all the various archetype breaking perks: QD, Threat Detector, Opening Shot and Rifled, that give lightning fast maxxed draw speed and undeserved OHK consistency all unreined. Combined with the Special ammo abundance especially with mods, its essentially made Crucible a floor-polishing, Snipe zone only for Handcannon users with a newer special mention for ARs. Weapon diversity? Bungie say no.
