I don't want to jump to conclusions because at the end of the day the end result is the same
But in the recent lore tab Bungie released about Osiris building the sundial it actually mentioned the now extinct fallen house of Rain
In it we see Saint-14 fighting against a camp full of purple clad fallen with a banner identical to the house of Dusk, Osiris informs the reader that this band of fallen are from the house of Rain. After the tussle however (and this is what makes even less sense) a fallen Ketch appears and starts bombarding Saint-14 and the camp
This implies that the house of Rain not only remaind as a house during the dark age but managed to acquire a full sized ketch to aid them.
But here's the thing, Variks informs us in the Kell of Kells Grimoire card that the house of Rain perished during the whirlwind and that they came up with the Kell of Kells prophecy.
So something doesn't add up here, did they die in the whirlwind or did they survive and die in our dark age?
Regardless they're dead, so end result is unchanged. But what do you guys think?
-
A powerful but brief time when some fallen tried to bring back the once dead house?

Bungie aren’t the most consistent story tellers out there.. The whole forsaken story in which cayde dies led to the whole drifter vs vanguard thing. In which the plot revolves around the “weapons of sorrow” used to kill his ghost. We investigate the bullet which was apparently the only thing that could have killed Sundance (caydes ghost) BUT if you read the lore for one eyed mask, a cabal literally squeezes a ghost in his hand, and it dies.. So essentially, the lore will follow whatever bungie are selling at that point in time. They don’t know their own game well enough to notice these kind of mistakes anyhow.
-
I know this will offend the fans of the Eliksni but maybe Variks lied to us a bit more than we thought. Not saying that everything he said was a lie, just some of it. Saint-14 doesn't seem to believe their stories of past nobility, even confirming that he has witnessed the dregs eat children. He has no pity for them.
-
Completely possible it was a large group of fallen that tried rebuilding house rain, similar to the current situation with house devils?
-
There are no retcons where time travel is involved. Other than that? The predictions about whether something is completely gone is only to be done after an investigation is done. Given the nature of the whirlwind event? I've always held it was far too chaotic to confirm an entire house departure. This will be interesting to say the least though.
-
I hate retcons. It's the primary reason I don't follow lore in games like Destiny very much. I feel like retcons happen because no one bothered to A: write everything down, or B: read what was written down. They feel lazy to me.
-
Honestly, Bungie probably just forgot which isn’t great as that lore is pretty trivial
-
Honestly doesn't surprise me anymore with Bungies writers. Not the first RetCon and won't be the last, Bungie are just lazy and incompetent nowadays.
-
It’s like y’all forgot that they retconned Reach. None of this surprises me in the least. They said a while back that gameplay story trumps extended universe story, that’s why Fall of Reach (the book) was different from the game. It’s important to remember that this is a paycheck for a vast majority of the devs, they don’t live and breathe the universe they create. Nor do they care if it goes against what was previously stated.

Bearbeitet von doobiecloud: 12/8/2019 7:32:26 PMHe was looking through alternate timelines, which means he will see things that never happened in our time. Edit: nvrm saw osiris say he heard the story from saint before. I think it's still more likely variks simply was wrong about rains extinction. Irl we have mistakenly believed certain species have gone extinct only to find them thriving in a remote area.
-
Maybe Variks was wrong. Or maybe they faked their deaths, possibly to avoid the conflict between the other houses
-
I honestly think bungie just forgot

Is the Sundial in or out of the Infinite Forest? That would probably make all the difference.

So everyone can see the quotes:

”House Rain lost in Whirlwind. No survivors, but I keep their prophecies.” —Variks

”The Titan fights for his life against purple-bannered Fallen, bearing the same symbol as modern Dusk soldiers. They are the House of Rain, the lowest House. The burning camp around them is curiously absent of bodies—but Osiris has heard Saint tell this story before. One of Saint’s first missions for the Speaker brought him to Mercury in a failed attempt to “re-take” that planet for humanity. They had not known at the time that the Vex had already started to transform the “garden world” into a machine. House Rain followed Saint’s jumpship and waited ’til the expedition had made camp. Then the Fallen annihilated the colonists Saint was charged to protect and beat him to within an inch of his life. The Echo lives that story first-hand now, and finds himself looking away at the terraformed vegetation at his feet instead. It’s already half machine—grass and metal blades growing beside each other under his boots. A Ketch roars down from the sky and rains heavy munitions on the battlefield, and the Echo’s vantage point fills with rolling clouds of dust. The Echo takes his leave. He’s seen enough.”

Yeah, I’d call that a retcon. Variks saying “no survivors” makes it a serious contradiction. But there is a possibility: Perhaps some Fallen tried to rebuild Rain, just as Eramis is trying to rebuild Devils. So these Fallen would not be the House members that died in the Whirlwind, but new blood that wanted to revive the House. Someone mentioned time travel, but our Saint-14 in our timeline told this story, and in our same timeline Variks said Rain was completely gone. No time travel loopholes there.

<Perhaps they hid post-Whirlwind in their own fleet. Still, don't know why none of the Echoes picked up Saint after the Fallen beat him on Mercury. That would be the perfect time to take him, give him inspiration and show him the future, give him his gun back, and send him back with a new mission.>

Bearbeitet von Spooky_Ari: 12/7/2019 8:08:00 PMWhat if.. Saint-14 WAS the "Whirlwind"! 🧐 and the ribbons he wears are the tattered banners of the House of Rain, and Variks uses the same colors for House of Dusk because he carries on their prophesies! 🤯 *mind blown*

Alternative timeline?
-
I think Variks was lying about the whole “Kell of Kells” prophecy BS to try and justify his whole push to become the new Kell of Kells. That’s what I think. No retcons to be found.

At least we finally know when we encounter the past Saint-14 to give him the Perfect Paradox.
