I had an idea for this a few years ago:
1. Earning a weapon unlocks its “Blueprint” in collections. Clicking on a weapon brings up a traces blueprint of the weapon with a side panel of all possible perks and barrels, all greyed out.
2. Deleting a weapon unlocks nodes in the Blueprint based on what it had (deleting a Bygones would unlock Corkscrew Rifling, Fluted Barrel, Armor-piercing sounds, Ricochet Rounds, High Impact Reserves, and Kill Clip)
3. Once you have deleted enough weapons to have all perks you want unlocked, you can select a button on the Blueprint for the weapon labeled “Craft”. Alternatively, the Craft option could be greyed out until every possible perk is unlocked to increase grind.
4. This brings up the chart of all perks/barrels/ammo traits. Pick from what you’ve unlocked, filling out a traditional set of perks, and click “Begin Crafting”. Price is 10,000 glimmer.
5. This generates a legendary quest titled “Weapon Smith: Weapon Name. Go visit Banshee-44 to begin.
6. Banshee will begin working on the frame, but will need special telemetries in order to code the right perks into the weapon. He will ask you to complete a significant number of objectives with a gun frame (I.e. gun with no perks). Hypothetically, Bygones would want:
150 headshots: Barrel telemetry
150 body shot kills: Barrel telemetry
300 3-burst hits: Bullet telemetry
500 kills: Bullet telemetry
200 double kills: Perk telemetry
25 Major or higher kills: Perk telemetry
7. Bring collected telemetries to Banshee. He will offer you a quest step to choose your Masterwork, and you will need to again go create a telemetry. The path for this can be a mission, kills in a certain way based on the Masterwork, etc...
8. Once Banshee has all telemetries, he will inform you that your weapon is nearly finished, but it will need a power cell to attach and activate all of the perk telemetries. This can be found either by completing a 100k Nightfall, winning 3 Crucible matches, or winning 2 Gambit matches.
9. Banshee uses the power core to fuse the perks into the frame, crafting your perfect weapon. However, he will need your help in replenishing his supplies, so his fee will be the following:
35 enhancement cores
100 legendary shards
250 weapon parts
25 of each planetary resources
5,000 glimmer
10. After paying for his services, you will be rewarded with a legendary gun, Masterwork set at 5/10, with your full set of choice perks.
Hopefully this makes the process of crafting a god roll long, but not unfair, and the costs are high enough to justify a custom roll

This is a great idea. Could include both PVP and PVE gameplay to progress as well to please everyone. We need to get these ideas some traction.

I’ve been posting this every now and again while trying to improve it, but it never gains traction. I’m gonna give it a shot on Reddit later probably, because I think it’s the best compromise between crafting god rolls and still keeping some of the grind and decision making

Now that Luke Smith is talking Weapons 2.0, even if he is saying it’s not on the radar, the very fact he spoke about it means it’s on a radar somewhere. Once Armour 2.0 is in and issues have been addressed, it’s the next logical step to full immerse in the craftbuilding he talks about. Thank you for taking the time to comment on my post. Will you post the link to the Reddit when it’s up?

That is an incredible idea. I think the craft option should be turned off until you get all perks for things like go figure, because you don’t have to do anything specific to get it, but for things like bygones it should be able to craft if you have one perk in each slot.

Thanks, man! I've tried to balance the reward of a perfectly crafted gun with the drawback of not having to grind for that gun again, while also adding in a decently long quest and resource costs that aren't insane, but definitely make you prioritize. I know there would be so many people out there scrapping a fantastic gun just to craft a new one because their old one had the wrong barrel or no Ricochet Rounds, so this would hopefully slow them down
