I always sort of assumed that our Guardian was wearing ceremonial garbs on account of the D2 banner having a bunch of Titans and a Hunter wearing the starting gear together and marking in what looks like a parade as well as the fact that the armor emphasizes the Class very greatly. D2 probably should have started with an in game cutscene with us marching in this celebration, or at least started the cinematic cutscene with Cayde looking down at the ceremony from the tower with emphasis on a specific guardian with their helmet on, implying that it was us. I still wonder why they had us start on our ship coming into the City and not have us start in the City streets, fighting the Cabal and protecting our people and slowly working our way up to the Tower. Personally, I think that would have been better, but that's just my opinion. What does a Kell know anyways?

Because having us appear during the middle of he attack rather than being there from the start makes it easier to explain why everything has gone to hell.
-
Does it though? The attack seemed to happen rather fast, even if it didn't, they could have shown us getting killed by falling debris, putting us out of commission for at least a little while. Plus, they could have paid homage to the first game's beginning by having us be revived to an "Eyes up, Guardian." to kick off D2.
-
It's left intentionally unclear how long has past by the time we arrive. Also they did the "Eyes up" thing, only way worse.
-
I know they did it in WM, I have yet to stop cringing at it.

Honestly most of Bungie's decisions don't make sense, it would've been so easy to just do a little parade cutscene at the start and either have the red legion attack start there, or show us being asked to go for a quick patrol. Sort of like "hey Guardian, i'm getting some strange readings from a sensor just south of the wall, it's probably on the fritz but are you able to check it out?"
