Destiny 2 Test Server

So a lot of my favorite games, PUBG, Overwatch, WoW, etc. have these things called test servers. I love participating in test servers because it really feels like the devs change things based on the feedback they receive from these groups. It helps them hone in before full launch and also allows them to really play outside the box with different things. Imagine a Destiny 2 test server (unfortunately these are usually PC only due to fees from Sony and Microsoft to push updates on their platforms) that allows Bungie to tweak Time to Kill on the most competitive shooting platform. Mess with class customization and sandbox changes galore. Then change it again, and again, and again, and again until they are happy with the balance. Now after only a few weeks (due to expedited testing groups since it's available to all PC players that own the game) they can push the new sandbox changes to the live game on all platforms. I get there's a sense of mystery behind things like the new raid-lairs, but things like putting in NF scoring, or Heroic Strike Modifiers, or Crucible Ranking can be implemented and tested on these servers allowing us to provide feedback before it hits live servers. This keeps them from releasing garbage or pointless updates which then require loads more testing before pushing the change to make sure they don't break it more than it already is. Why is this not a thing? Thanks :D

  • I don't know what goes through Bungie's heads. Good practice states that all changes need to be tested. For example: Update: Tweak Explosive Payload Developer Responsibility: Test each available case of explosive payload to verify update. Here's the thing, I tested all cases of explosive payload within 1 hour of the update going live. Yeah, just one hour, by one user, was all it took to test it. Test discovered that Sniper Rifles with Explosive Payload do less damage than normal snipers. This is a test that just the Developer who did the update code themselves could've done and caught well in advance. Bungie has over 600 employees. The update was actually incredibly tiny. Maybe 30 lines of code had a variable tweaked. Took them two months to do this update. They couldn't spare a single person for 1 hour to test the adjustment of 2 lines of code. If they are unwilling to have their in-house Game Testers or their contracted Game Testers do their job, there's not a chance in hell they'll fork out the money to setup test servers so that they can suddenly actually accept player response and bug reports.

  • The game isn't played on servers, theres your answer. (I don't care what Bungle say about a "hybrid" system, games are still hosted on clients. I've seen no evidence otherwise)
