You don’t get DDOSed you get DOSed, big difference. You needa be really skilled to be able to DDOS someone. And it usually isn’t over a video game.

I seriously doubt anyone is getting a hacking group together just overload destiny servers to get someone a better pvp score. The energy and time needed for this is ridiculous. Although...for something like paid carries, where actually money is exchanged, there might be a market for it.

You use a botnet. It launches the attack across multiple servers/machines, hell in theory you could run 10 virtual machines on one computer and do it. It is actually probably more common than a Dos attack.

Your upload speed would have to be faster than the targets download speed to DDoS from 1 computer running 10 virtual machines.

Not really. In targeting a standard home network you just have to be able to flood a consumer level router. It’s not so much about how much data you send as opposed to how many request you can spam in a short amount of time. As I understand it most consumer routers simply shutdown from the strain of being flooded with hundreds of request in a matter of seconds. That said I work in tech services for a municipality so we have different methods of dealing with attacks than a typical home user, namely netmotion as a software solution. I don’t particularly worry about safeguarding my home network from a denial of service attack because it’s just not economical to do so, and the affordable solutions either compromise qos or not what I would consider a front line defense.

Folks, if you suspect you're being a target for DoS attacks, buy or build a pfSense router/firewall. Don't listen to this person. At the very least, call your ISP as a suspected attack is happening and ask them what's happening. They'll know where all the traffic is coming from. They may even report the attack if you tell them you think you're being DoS'd.

The only way you could pull off a decent ddos would build a Trojan to infect other computers, create a backdoor, implant your dos software and silently make them attack the unsuspecting server or site. Seeing as you are hijacking other people's computers and internet connection, you are now looking at federal charges in the 30+ year range, I still can't see how it would be worth doing for a pvp match. Running multiple virtual machines from one system will still be limited by the single internet connection. The benefits of running a distributed coding network is no one single person is responsible. It's much harder to stop an attacking coming from all over the country, or the world, than it is to stop one single person on one machine.

You don't need to "get a hacking group together" to have multiple attacking computers. There are networks already out there to leverage. Or you can roll your own backdoor, or use resources at work, etc...

Especially if you "work" together often, you get to know each other's strengths and weaknesses. Having a trusted group means if anyone gets caught, they won't rat you out. Usually.

Thats the point of bots. You know what bots are correct? Nobody asks to be a bot. Your computer at home may very well have a bot installed on it. It doesnt hurt anything and pretty much just hides in your system until a bot herder controlling the botnet uses all these zombie bots to ping tf out of a target. So no, nobody willingly asks to be a bot. Its innocent peoples computers that do all the work in the ddos

Anything you inject into a strangers system can be tied back to you. I use my system, I have physical control over it. I can pull a hdd and smash before anyone can find me. Bots leave footprints. Imagine...youre running a bot on someones system, they power off....its in there. Your footprint. If they suspect they have been hacked, they have proof. You ip is in the injecting packet used to implement the bot.

Well im sure if you are smart enough to herd a shit ton of zombies, you're smart enough to cover your tracks. I agree though that those hackers are not the ones ddos'ing pvp matches. Look up ip stressers amd booters. Those are what the script kiddies are using to boot in pvp using ddos tools that are mostly free. You also need a sniffer to fetch the ips but wireshark is free and most of these booters have geo tagging so say in trials, if you know your 3 fireteam members geographic area, then its simple, the other 4 ip addresses can be booted. Or if your fireteam members are friends they can give you their ip so when you sniff the ips, the 4 ips are super easy to differentiate. Its really quite simple, check it out. Ip stressers / booters

I remember back in the early days of the internet, we had to really be organized to get a decent ddos going. The real question is why would anyone do that for a pvp match?

Script kiddies are garbage hackers. Maybe you and I have different terminology but we used to call copy, paste hackers...script kiddies. Because they never wrote anything, just copied some code they found. If they ever did code, it was usually filled with bugs.
