Protectors of Light Ch. 18: Old Memories

Angel and Logan stepped out of the portal, and found themselves in the center of a colorful ice cream parlor. The walls were bright white and dull red, which seemed to compliment each other. Angel spun around, admiring the place, but she noticed something odd: all of the petrified faces on the people who were previously enjoying their frozen delights. "Uh, Logan?..." Angel asked. "Yeah, I didn't think about this..." Logan replied while scratching behind his ear. He held up his hands defensively and walked around. "I'm sorry, people! You can go back to eating your ice cream!" "Don't ever do that again!" A young man behind the bar shouted while shaking an ice cream scoop towards the Guardians. "Yes, I'm sorry. We had to make an emergency escape..." The warlock said to the man. He, then, clapped his hands together as he turned to Angel. "So! What sounds good to you?" Angel looked at the different flavors, but none of them sounded good to her. Finally, the woman spoke. "Do you have... uh... a dream shake?..." The man behind the counter, who had obviously dealt with too many people today, sighed loudly. "Ma'am, do you see 'dream shake' on the menu?..." "No, but I--" "Then there's no dream shake," the man continued before turning away from the titaness. "Hey, I believe that was a fair question..." Logan said defensively. "Who's asking for a dream shake?..." asked a voice, followed by an older man coming out of the kitchen. He had definitely aged many centuries; he was not a Guardian. The man paused and looked over the couple. "Angel, you're alive? Praise the Traveler! And Logan, you found her! I'm so happy for you!" Angel, shocked, turned to Logan, who was smiling, then back to the man. "I'm sorry. Have we met?..." "Oh, yes... Mr. Mann told me that upon revival, you forget most of your memories..." the gentleman sighed. "I'll make you a dream shake, and for you sir?" "Cayrik, just call me Logan... But I'll take a vanilla, please," the warlock replied. Cayrik grinned before disappearing back into the kitchen. The two Guardians and the civilian sat down at a booth. "Here you are, Angel, one dream shake; orange sherbet and creamy vanilla in a lemon-lime soda," Cayrik said with a smile. Angel took the glass with a smile. "So, I used to know you, right?" She asked. "Yes," the man replied while slowly sitting down; he cringed as his joints creaked and ached. "Okay then. You're not... my dad, are you?" Angel asked with her eyebrows furled. "No, no. I'm just an elderly man that used to know you when we all lived in Chicago. I was a family friend..." "You knew us when we lived in Chicago? What do you remember?" Angel asked. "What would you like to know?" Cayrik asked in reply. Angel and Logan shared looks with each other. "What were my parents like? Were we a happy family?" The woman asked. The man shifted around, as if to shake an old memory in his mind. "Fenyor and Juno Llewellyn were great people; you took your mother's maiden name: Perkins. Both were human, I'm sure you are aware, but Fenyor claimed to be a ranger--a survivalist--and would take you camping as a young girl. Juno was a nurse at a local hospital, and saved many lives during the Golden Age. You were a great family that loved each other very much; and you would often visit my old shop and you would always order a 'dream shake', but no one knew why you called it that. I used to keep it as 'Angel's Choice' on the menu, but when I heard you died, I took it down..." Angel, desperately missing her parents, began to tear up. Logan gave Angel a napkin so she could dab away her tears. "Should I stop?" Cayrik asked, feeling sorrowful now. "No!" Angel shouted. "No, please, tell me more..." she said in a weak voice. "Okay..." the man continued to think. "You always wished to be a superhero, growing up, from all the shows you used to watch..." Cayrik added. Angel choked up from the sudden laugh. "I remember a story you used to tell, Angel, about before you two started dating..." "Oh joy..." Logan said before his face blushed. He began fiddling with his thumbs as the man continued. "You said how he ordered you an ice cream, but an engram in the bottom of the glass had a note for a dance..." Cayrik smiled as Angel shoved her elbow into Logan's side. "It was some time around then, that we learned we were both supernerds," Angel said as she continued to laugh rather than weep. "Well, I wouldn't say we were... Yeah, yeah we are..." Logan replied. "I wish I could remember all of this stuff..." the woman said as she rubbed her finger on the table. "I remember a convention you two went to. Logan, you dressed as some man with a red cape; Angel, you dressed as a character with a white one. A couple deal, I suppose..." Cayrik continued. "Yup. Supernerds," Angel repeated with a chuckle. "Well, I must return to work," the gentleman said as he stood from the booth. "Do you know what happened to my parents?" Angel asked. The man froze. "After you died... they left Chicago--that city was dead to them--and they were never heard from again..." Cayrik left the two Guardians in peace. Angel's eyes welled up with tears again and Logan pulled her close. "Thank you..." Angel said with a choked voice.
