Red Dead Redemption did not see the dramatic increase some gaming sites reported. It's sales increased on Amazon, but in the tens and not the thousands. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/07/no-red-dead-redemption-sales-probably-arent-up-6000/
Evolve going free really looks like a success story. According to Steam Charts, the peak player count on Steam went from 234 to 51,099, higher than the peak at launch. And I would qualify this a success except the game has been a bargain bin item for months. It's pretty clear players don't want to spend any money on this game, and now the developer is asking freeloaders to spend money on micro-transactions. I suppose they have nothing to lose if they are wrong.
The real test for old games will be the Skyrim remaster on consoles. It is a legitimately old game that most people played and it is selling for a premium $60. I don't think it will be a hot seller.
Edit: Is Skyrim legitimately old? Other games released in 2011 include Batman: Arkham City, L.A. Noire, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Saints Row: The Third, Dark Souls, Duke Nukem Forever, and Homefront. Just a year earlier, Bungie released Halo: Reach. What do you think?

Dark souls came out in 2011? Wow, I thought it was older.

I doubt he sixty dollar part is true. But if it is, I'm not paying sixty dollars for a copy paste. No matter how awesome that game was.

If you have skyrim and all of the dlc on steam, you will get the remaster for free.
-
Im sorry but your last paragraph is completely false

skyrim is a far cry from old
-
Far Cry is really old. Skyrim is old. Last gen. Before the last Presidential election. My son was in Kindergarten then and now he's in middle school. It's old.
Far Cry is really old. Skyrim is old. Last gen. Before the last Presidential election. My son was in Kindergarten then and now he's in middle school. It's old.
5 years qualifies as old nowadays? Lol. I was using a far cry as in the phrase not the franchise
I was using a far cry as in the phrase not the franchise
That's why it's funny.
Far Cry is really old. Skyrim is old. Last gen. Before the last Presidential election. My son was in Kindergarten then and now he's in middle school. It's old.
So what you're saying is your kid was a kid when it came out, and is still a kid? 5 years isn't old.

None of those games are old. NES is old. N64.. old. Dreamcast, pong, Atari, game arcades on the block back in the day. That's old.
-
N64 is an antique. Atari 2600 is an artifact.
-
I understand the concept of games aging differently, but in all honesty that's stupid. None of those 2011 games are old. Maybe the word you want is outdated? But Skyrim isn't even that..
-
It is a legitimately old game
Yeah 5 years old is pretty ancient.
-
I can't wait for Skyrim since I never played it all last-gen, but the fact of the matter still stands. Red Dead Redemption and Evolve are living again (:

I would love to see more backwards compatibility.
