It comes from a lot of things, it comes from religion, philosophy, various honor codes, etc., but they can be shifted to favor one's personality.

Which is a very dangerous thing to do. If we define our own morality, then we will never feel the need to gauge it. For it is too easy to fool ourselves into believing that we are always in the right and that everybody else is wrong. We become proud and arrogant. "I'm a good person, I'm tolerant, I don't judge. I have a good set of morals because I know what's right and wrong. Don't tell me what to do, don't impose your morality on me." In doing so, we blind ourselves to our own arrogance and to true morality: which are the commandments God gave us.
