For a long time I have had a theory about how this game's drops work, and many of my friends have told me that it seems very valid. After much testing it seems to be holding true.
My theory is that Destiny's drops run on a lottery system. What I mean is, that every player is given a number, that number determines what drops for who. For example, you have people like me who has played the game since launch. I have received 4 Universal Remotes, 5 No Land Beyonds, 4 Icebreakers, and 4 Plan Cs. All my other Exotics I had to buy or only got one. Weapons I have never seen... Fatebringer, Abyss Defiant, Song of Ir Yut, all the exotic rocket launchers, and many hand cannons and auto rifles until as of recent. Weapons that drop most often for me are shotguns, sniper rifles, and scout rifles (with outlaw and firefly and explosive rounds).
The people I play with have similar things happen to them. One guy has gotten 10 ghallys since launch. Another guy did not get the Beowulf shader until TDB expansion. Many of my friends have a couple of weapons they have gotten repetitively and others they have never seen. I have no proof, hard numbers, nor an exact way to create any connection between anything relating to a character and their loot drops. But this seems to be the most sound theory I have. Do you guys agree?

To be honest i'm pretty sure the instant you enter a game a reward gets assigned to you regardless of performance.I think the RNG is messed up though as like you described above it only seems to recognise weapons you already have and seems intent on giving you duplicates as rewards. Many times I've pick up something from Xur and only to get it again soon after.
