I know what you mean by them being unique and different but that uniqueness and difference does give you an advantage. I hate to say it but the game would be stale without the exotics. With this kind of game, there will never be true "balance" because certain weapons have a unique ability. If everyone had the same weapon loadout or archetype you might as well be playing gears of war. Which then leads to hiding and creeping around the corner and shooting and killing the other person first. Thats the reason why i like Destiny because of the exotics and the variety. Yes people do depend on the same exotics but if you notice, the ones that cry and complain about those are the ones who dont have it.
