If you notice, all of the new supers derive power from a weapon of some kind. It is possible that because we are weakened we have to use a weapons to channel the light effectively.

I like this idea, would fit well. Supposedly the forest in the edz zone is coated in dark energy from the travellers shard, what if we have to go there and forge these weapons to harness the dark energy so we can take the fight back to ghaul.

So you did. Sorry I misread. Though to be honest, I kind of love the idea of all the Guardians picking up their fancy new light-imbued weapons, and the Titan just looks at his hands and is like "nah, I'm good with these thanks."

I think this is it. I am presuming we lose our power,and are given an artifact to channel the light in a specific manner (new subclass) and that once we beat the game we get our other classes back with their D2 tweaks.
