As we know, the new subclasses (sentinel, arcstrider and dawnblade) ae replacing those that correspond with their elements (defender, bladedancer and sunsinger). I'm just wondering how this inability to use the old subclasses previously mentioned will fit into the lore. If it's a game balance reason, why show us Zavala casting a bubble in the first place? I'm not complaining, just interested lore-wise.

He casted bubble when the traveler was still in one piece. The scene was when the tower was under siege, otherwise he lost his powers too

There is lore to it, traveler dying yadda yadda, losing our old powers yadda yadda, developing new powers yadda yadda

10 RepliesPossibly, it's us developing our own style of combat, reworking the flaws we saw in the older styles. So, for example, Warlocks of our team saw the Sunsinger as too passive, too support oriented, and shaped the Light into a blade to cut through the enemy. Titans saw that the Defender was too static, too single minded, and created a shield that still serves as an aegis, but is fluid and aggressive as well. Bladedancers saw that their knife was too short, too centered on closing the gap, and created the glaive to counter that.

1 ReplyMy theory is of course we shaped the light in new ways based on what we have done dear. The sentinel's shield looks very similar to the aegis, even has a little symbol on the front. The dawnblade could be derived from Crota's sword. Arcstrider even very acrobatic, and in rise of iron the axe cussed you to do quite a few flips to keep that heavy thing moving. It's a stretch but we are the strongest guardians who faced the biggest threats, we had to adapt

Well Zavala used the bubble before we lost our connection to the light. Before our lost connection we use the Old Subclasses I'm pretty sure

We lose the light from the Traveller and all our abilities. We then need to find something else (I've heard we find a shard of the Traveller). It's possible that this different method of getting our light changes our owners or that we find some sort of quest item (sword, shield or stick) which have been infused with light so we get to use them
-
Maybe it's not an "inability". Maybe, in the lore, these are considered better ways to use our Light.
-
Zavala used a bubble before guardian abilities were taken by Gaul. With the shard of the traveler in the EDZ being the suggested method of retrieving our power maybe we forge our subclasses ourselves or the shard gives us new abilities.
-
1 ReplyGood question... I was wondering about that, too. Will our new subclass powers already exist at the start of "Homecoming"? Because that would be hard to explain, lore-wise.
-
Zavala cast his bubble before the cabal managed to drain the traveller's light from us, which is a time when many titans have this ability.
-
5 RepliesThey don't care. This "new" game is their big chance at dropping all power levels across the game and that is what they did.
-
I'm willing to guess that the new subclasses are just evolved forms of the old ones. As we get more accustomed to the light and learn more about it, it'd be reasonable to believe that we'd be able to modify our abilities. Of course that implies the new subclasses would be improvements, which is hard to say objectively, especially knowing as little as we do now.

I don't if you saw that one scene in the trailer where Zavala was talking to the guardian and he said something along the lines of how the traveler light made its way to the guardian or something and my guess is whatever light we were given must either 1. Boosted our original subclass and we're able to channel it in a different way now or 2. Whatever light we lost when the traveler was taken and somehow "it" gave us the last of its light and it gave us a weakened version of our original subclass but later on we're able to realize it can become a powerful ability or 3. This goes back to when somehow and somewhere in the lore that guardians of old used this form of abilities before current warlocks, titans and hunters and we must master the ways of ancient techniques and abilities my guess is either of those 3 if not, I'd be surprised.

1 ReplyThats what I'd Like to know aswell. I Main Defender for everything and I can't find anything that talks about Ward of Dawn returning.
-
My guess it has something to do with them locking the traveler, we have to learn how to use light from a different source. Once we learn how to use this light, we channel it back into the old subclasses to upgrade them(this is just a theory I have no evidence to back this up). I'm sure we will figure that out when we play D2
-
Zavala was doing that prior to us losing our powers I believe
-
Zavala casting the bubble happened before the traveler was contained so it makes sense it that sense.
-
Zavala was doing the bubbles during the battle but they didn't show him use it after the legion locked the traveler. So Captain America Zavala.

Their is no lore, lore is actually in-game. Hopefully thorn is in it.
