I'm fine with people have pistols, shotguns and hunting rifles but be able to get assault rifles legally is ridiculous.

Can you give me a reason why an average American citizen should be allowed to have an automatic/semiautomatic rifle?

An Assault Weapon is a semi automatic rifle that is similar in style to an Assault Rifle. Assault Rifles are illegal in many states, but not Federally. With a Federal tax stamp, and assuming that your state allows it, you can purchase Assault Rifles manufactured before 1986. The tax stamp is $200 and takes about six months to get, assuming you pass the background check.

Assault rifle: a rapid-fire, magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for infantry use. Now to answer: For sport: what type of sport is it for? If it's for shooting ranges, then allow only the shooting ranges to have the assault rifles with restrictions on who can use them. Ex. You need to have training with handguns and hunting rifles before. Self Defense: I said already that handguns, hunting rifles and shotguns should be allowed. All of those can be used for self defense. You don't need an assault rifle to defend yourself. It's not like 50 armed men are storming your house. If that was a regular occurrence it would be understandable but it's isn't.

It's not like we're living in fear. You need to restrict the weapons people are able to get because many are too dangerous and pointless for people to have.
