Are actual journalists a dying breed?

For a few years now, it seems that the prerequisites for journalism has decreased if not disappeared entirely. Just look at the usual "article" you find now a days. It will usually be a single paragraph (if even that) which just gives a half assed reiteration or summarization of what was said in a video, usually a tik tok one, embedded on the page. Those shitty sites where the article is broken into different pages where you have to click through just to get to the meat and potatoes of it only for the writer to keep bringing up irrelevant or previously mentioned stuff just so you keep clicking the next page put in more effort. Hell, Yahoo journalist put in more effort and my friend and I use to joke around that we could be Yahoo journalists while still in high school with as low they set the bar. Surely it hasn't always been this terrible, right?

Growing up I was always strong in English and Literature classes and enjoyed the writing prompts and creative writing opportunities. In college I often wrote people's papers in exchange for them to do my math homework. As for journalism, it was something I started considering as I approached adulthood. I ultimately joined the military as an intelligence specialist in the Navy but I find myself writing briefs and articles all the time now. BLUFs, article structuring, sourcing, research, etc. and I enjoy it (most of the time). I also wrote lots of fun articles on my favorite professional sports teams that would break down their strengths and weaknesses, post-game summaries and analysis, and predictions. One thing I have noticed, in both Intell and Sports, is that there is A LOT of material regurgitation. As well as main stream news media! Once someone puts together an article or story, everyone else tears out the good bits and writes their own, often not even bothering to rephrase anything. Straight up copy and paste. I considered a college major in journalism, but was often told "journalism is dead" and scared myself into thinking I would never make a decent living doing it. It still interests me though! And I always enjoy a good article when I stumble across one. Maybe I'll try freelance writing for a local newspaper or magazine just for fun?
