I have a bookmark folder with a compilation of sites I use to get a wide variety of perspectives that I can combine with raw data and first-level sources. My list is as follows:
- Pew Research Center: It’s the gold standard for polling and raw data. I’ve used it to back opinions on both sides of the current political aisle.
- The National Interest: They have good breakdowns of military, geopolitical, and economic news. They also have op-eds on both sides of the aisle. Valuably, they cite their sources quite often with in-page hyperlinks you can follow to check a claim that was made.
- BBC News: They have good factual articles and op-eds that trend left. However I prefer them to American outlets that lean left because I feel the geographical separation allows them to provide a more “balanced” bias (if that’s a thing) when discussing American issues.
- FOX News: Never my first source for domestic news or political issues, FOX nonetheless is valuable for a right-wing viewpoint. Their Business page is a budget Wall Street Journal and the Entertainment page is generally good for a laugh at the expense of a celebrity or the odd wholesome story.
- POLITICO: They’re hit or miss. I’ve noticed a lot of bias creeping into their articles, but you can still glean some solid information or ideas from them.
I want to pay for the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, but since I’m a cheapskate that’s not happening for a while.
What news do you guys use? Do NOT start discussing banable issues. This is not what I (or the mods I’ll bet) want. What I want is to see how OffTopic informs itself about our world and its goings-on.
