It needs to have been great at some point in order for it to be great again, so when was it great?
What is the ideal time in American History that we have to emulate?

When the natives worshipped the land and knew our origins. Shamans and peace pipes and gods. Land of the actual free.

Not a MAGA fan but my opinion is that America has always been great. Sure it had and has problems, but for everything we do wrong we do a lot right. When people make their comparisons to other countries they only highlight America’s problems while ignoring problems the other countries face. That being said just because America is great doesn’t mean other countries aren’t too. But I’m proud of my country and have more reasons to be than not to be.

1 ResponderBefore banks took control. The US held out for a while, but it caved.

Not a MAGA nerd, but I'd say it was great back during Washington's presidency.

When we created a government run for the people by the people with inalienable rights. The basis of our constitution promotes life, liberty, individual rights, and freedom. Sure, getting equality for women and blacks took a while, but we were among the first. We fought against genocide in the 40s. Our country's direction is determined by a republic, not an oligarchy, monarchy, or dictatorship. The American Dream is someone who starts out poor, who climbs to the top on their own merit. Opportunity, freedom, individual rights, life, liberty, and our republic is what makes America great.

1940s when we fought against a literal genocide.

1 ResponderFor the make America great equates to the way it was in the 1940's and 50's, when everyone "knew their place".

Nowhere near a MAGA fan, especially with what he pulled with shutting the government down and screwing over almost 1 million people for the sake of a wall. But, I'll indulge in this. I'd say America was great probably just a bit after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and around the time the Civil War ended where Americans kicked traitorous asses and unified the country again. Another good time would probably be in the 60's after the Civil Rights Act passed. At least for my extended family in the states, that was a great time, because they were finally treated like humans rather than being treated like animals. Another good time would probably be around the breaking of the Berlin Wall under Reagan. The economic policy at the time is questionable since Reaganomics hasn't really been successful in the long run (aside from the people it generally helped, but it hasn't really helped everyone out), but the amount of people joined together in one cause easily made that time a great time in America's history (Irony is that the same people who were chanting "Tear down the wall" are the same people who are now saying "Build the wall", or at least, people with the same mentality). A fourth time that America was great was probably in the 90's during the economic surplus. At least for my immediate family, it was great since my family went from being pretty much homeless to getting a roof over our heads in less than 10 years, and with a third of my family becoming naturalized around this time. Because of this, my parents both went from being hardline Republicans during the mid-late 80's to being more neutral, up until now where they're both solid Democrats because of Trump. That, and the 90's culture is easily one of the better ones to live through.

1 ResponderAre you conflating "great" with "perfect"? Yeah, I belive you are.
-
from a foreign policy/economic stand point... that of which President Trump is referring to would be the Reagan Era. Socially... it depends on who you ask

6 RespostasNot a MAGA fan, but felt like answering this question. The 20s. Golden age of sports and a strong economy. Personally I believe that was America at it's height. Alternatively post WW2 America during economic expansion. Also a really good time for the states.

I don't really get the point in indulging the Official Presidential Memes Of The President Trump Presidency. If this is a genuine question, it requires like minimum effort to research the identity politics of Trumpism, and (mercifully) you're going to get answers a lot faster if you avoid actual interaction with Trumpists. If this is an effort to be extremely cool by dunking on Trumpism, we should all remember that the rule book clearly states that the very act of engaging with it actually nets you negative cool points.
That said, the one guy who said America was never great is right so deal with it dinguses
When the Democrats had government control.

The phrase "Make America Great Again" doesn't refer to a specific time period. Rather, it's more of a nostalgia tactic. It makes people think back to when they believed that times were better, whether that be the 80's, 90's, early 00's before the recession, or further back. It's similar to Harding's "return to normalcy" slogan in the 20's after WW1. If you did want one period of time in which America was the most powerful and was on the top of the world, it'd probably be the 40's, after going through the trials of the Dustbowl and The Great Depression in the 30's.

5 RespostasEditado por Soupreem: 1/21/2019 11:05:22 PMTough question, mostly because every American era has had some form of hardship. The slavery argument of the pre-civil war. Reconstruction until around WWI being a giant cluster-blam!-. The 20s with organized crime and excessive credit usage. The Great Depression being just horrible for the people. The 50s and 60s seeing a lot of expansion, but also racial tensions and hysteria of the commies. Though the Civil Rights Movement was a great overall positive to have happened. The 70s with the Cold War and a few Middle Eastern crises, on top of controversy surrounding 'Nam and the hippie way of life. The 80s and 90s is what I'd call ideal, with the Cold War ending and huge pushes in technology, even if certain demographics were still lacking basic rights, and racism was still a bit of an issue is some places. The 2000s until '08 we're also in this category, but with several advances in human rights. '08 to IDK, 2013-ish? Was a decently large economic downturn that I don't think should be emulated again if at all possible. To the present day, where America is more splintered than ever, journalism is in shambles, social justice in some places (especially schools) has gone too far, but tech is booming, the economy is decent, and civil rights across all groups has improved almost everywhere in the US. TL;DR, idk if I'd say America has ever been truly "great," as every era has had positives and negatives. There is much reform needed to get America to a position of being "great," namely in the form of political party reform, to start.

Think your looking into to it too much, there would have been great things happening in the past as well as terrible things, you can try and do the great things again without bringing back the bad, it's not an all or nothing kinda deal.

right now Anyone who says anything else is full of shit. Right now, the standard of living for even most lower-class citizens is higher than what most royalty had 200-300 years ago.
This applies to most of the world, not just America.
