I would bring back elemental primaries but only for exotics because that would make the Exotics feel more Exotic. There is going to be a lot to read here so please bear with me here.
This is the element i would put on each exotic primary if i were to do so (Keep in Mind that I am trying to make an even spread between all Damage Types and I am basing what Elemental Damage Type a gun would get around how it looks and its perks):
Auto Rifles:
Fabian Strategy - Arc
Hard Light - Arc
Monte Carlo - Void
SUROS Regime - Special Case - In the Case for SUROS Regime, the Elemental Damage type should be able to change depending on what Perk you have attached to it. If you have Focused Fire equipped then SUROS should be a Solar Damage Type and if you have Spinning Up equipped then SUROS would be an Arc Damage Type
Zhalo Supercell - Arc (already)
Hand Cannons:
Ace of Spades - Void
Hawkmoon - Solar
The Last Word - Solar
The First Curse - Arc
Pulse Rifles:
Bad JuJu - Void
Red Death - Solar
No Time To Explain - Arc
Scout Rifles:
MIDA Multi Tool - Special Case - In The Case of MIDA Multi Tool, this guns Elemental Damage Type should be able to naturally adapt to what Subclass a person has equipped without needing a perk to change between Elemental Damage Types (Which is the same premise that Susanoo is built around). so if a person has an Arc Subclass the MIDA would be an Arc Type gun. If a person has a Solar Subclass equipped the MIDA would be a Solar Type gun. if the person has a Void Subclass Equipped then the MIDA would be a Void Type Gun. and to add to this, the MIDA Multi Tool should (IN PVE ONLY) be able to adapt to the sheilds of the enemies it is shooting at. so say if you are going through a Patrol or Strike or Prison of Elders or what have you and are sporting (for examples sake) a void subclass thus making the MIDA a Void elemental type and you start shooting a shielded enemy that is an Arc shield. The MIDA would after (again for examples sake) two shots recognize the enemy is of a different elemental shield type and become the Elemental Damage Type Needed to down that enemy and once the enemy is dead the MIDA would go back to the void elemental type after the enemy is dead and you use your void melee or super.
Jade Rabbit - Arc
Tlaloc - Void
Touch of Malice - Solar
Boolean Gemini - Special Case - In the Case of Boolean Gemini, this gun should be able to switch between the element types Void and Arc. Arc Damage to go with the Perk One Way which grants bonus agility on precision kills. Void Damage to go with the Perk Or Another which grant bonus armor on non precision kills. The rationale with this set up being we imagine Arc energy being really fast and associated with agility. We also imagine Void Energy being really strong and associate that with Armor.
Shot Gun:
Universal Remote - Solar
Sniper:
No Land Beyond - Solar
