Should Proximity Chat Be Implemented As an Option?

READ BEFORE VOTING Destiny, Bungie’s newest exquisite videogame, is filled with breathtaking visuals and compelling gameplay, and that’s after only playing the Alpha and Beta versions, although there is one major flaw that’s been brought to my attention: Destiny lacks proximity chat, which is the ability to speak with other players whom are near you. Currently, players can wave to each other, dance with each other, and point at things “in a desperate, and futile, attempt at communication” (SoloPopo). Players can’t make new friends, talk about strategies, nor ask for assistance. With proximity chat, players can get to know each other and share their experiences they’ve had in Destiny. Maybe you just want to compliment someone’s awesome armor and be on your way. Players would be able to talk about how they’ll complete an event or where to find some loot. Imagine trying to strategize by pointing everywhere. Players would be able to ask for assistance during combat. Imagine fighting enemies with a few other players, and when you get cornered, all you can do is point at them and dance for your life. Destiny is based on the notion of being always-online and multiplayer. If everyone is a mute, then what is the point? As SoloPopo said, “It's ridiculous, and kills the immersion. Why are other players even in the game if you can't interact with them?” Being able to wave and point is fine if you don’t have a headset plugged in, but it should be optional, because being able to speak is a much better alternative. Proximity chat should be the next feature implemented in Destiny. In GameInformer's interview with Lars Bakken, Bungie's multiplayer lead, Bakken stated "We know that, not just in multiplayer, that in general, when you get into a game with someone that you don't know or someone that you've never seen before and may never see again, they have this power to completely destroy your entire experience and maybe ruin the game for you forever" (Manuch). If another player is being obnoxious and you want to disable proximity chat, you can simply switch between three chat settings: Proximity, Fire Team, and Off. This feature would also require the following settings. Chat Settings: Proximity - Chat with players near you. Fire Team - Chat with your Fire Team. (A symbol appears above your head to non-fire team members which indicates that you cannot chat.) Off - You can't hear anyone in-game, nor can they hear you. (A symbol appears above your head to all players which indicates that you cannot chat. This setting would also be activated upon joining an Xbox LIVE party and whatever the similar chat system is called on Playstation consoles.) Orrr Proximity Chat: On/Off, and you can always hear and speak to your Fire Team. Here's another good thread about the topic. Here's an additional feature Coffeenator requested in the comments:
One feature I would add to the prox. chat is a kind of karma system where if someone gest muted by some number of people in a period of time that they are muted in-game for everyone except for players in their fire team if they are in one. Over time their Karma would get better and they would be unmuted until they would get muted enough to go over the threshold again.
Sources: SoloPopo. "Proximity Chat Is Not an Option." • IMO yes and no. For yes proximity chat will help you communicate with that guy you found in free roam because you two make a good team. No because then you run the change of listening to that trash talking 13 year old.

  • I'd like to add my 2 cents: how would proximity chat work? In the game's Settings you have an option to completely disable Proximity Chat to avoid accidentally turning it on. If a player has proximity chat enabled in the Settings, they can use it through 2 functions assigned to a single button. - Hold the button to switch between listening to Fireteam chat and proximity chat. This is the function that enables Proximity Chat. - Press the button to switch between talking in Fireteam chat only and proximity chat. This way you can hear everything in the proximity chat but only talk to your Fireteam if you choose to. I think having these two functions would be simple enough and allow the amount of flexibility needed so the proximity chat works well

I would love this. At the very least, this would be fantastic for explore mode. The game needs easier ways to meet new people and communicate with them. The majority of the developers at Bungie may be a bit antisocial, but their playerbase is not. We want to make new friends and forge new bonds through battle. Making it so that we cannot speak to each other without jumping through hoops (however easy they may be to jump through) is directly against what players want. It is a heck of a lot easier to mute the 5% of the playerbase that would be irritating than it is to convince the other 95% to join my fireteam.

      • This is muy importante. I'm worried Bungie hasn't found a good, stable system for it in the open world. Multiplayer chat is a MUST though.

            • Heck there is absolutely no socialization in this social game. No text chat, no prox chat. We got 4 emotes and the most horrible way to communicate known to man, forums. I salute you in your endeavor to attempt to do something, anything about this poorly thought out social experience.

                          • Proximity chat would definitely be helpful. It was difficult to coordinate in PVP without some sort of team chat. And the tower was nearly as silent as a tomb except for when announcers muttered something in the background. Not having chat definitely made it feel less like a living world. Sure proximity chat could get overbearing and obnoxious if you've got a ton of people talking, but that's why having the option to turn it off whenever you want would be great too. I can listen and talk with others when I want, and I can make it as quiet as a graveyard whenever I want as well.

                                • He's suggesting an optional setting, guys. If you don't want the ability to communicate in an MMO, just turn it off and allow other people who do find it useful to use it.

                                    • If it works so well in a postive manner explain how the great communities that use this system are viewed. Dayz is for sociopaths, where you force people that are handcuffed to eat and drink substances that are lethal before you kill them or leave them to be eaten by zeds, if you don't execute them. People ask for simulated -blam!- in Dayz. This system leads to far more trouble than it creates good contact. If people really want to talk to others stop being lazy and invite them to fireteam/network chat and show that you really want to foster good teamplay. Otherwise its the same group of insolent little kids (not an age insult, its based on maturity) that play COD, BF4, and Dayz and would use it to be tools in a game that is otherwise amazing. I should NOT have to mute an entire area because people are behaving in ways that affect my experience, the people I want to be social with I am, the people I do not want to be social with I am not. If you want to be more social do it in a way that does not affect someone elses experience. For examples of the kind of people that want this: Polyamarous Edited: Jun 17 at 10:32:04 AM Permalink If you voted no to this then you need ur dick chopped off. derpds Edited: Jul 3 at 10:04:47 AM Permalink More I THINK of it...Yes...Will make to some great trolling vids... MajorCrabs Edited: Jun 16 at 9:54:22 PM Permalink Prox chat also fulfils a major SOCIAL aspect of any game. Take planetside 2. Without Prox chat that game would have been so boring. You had your screamers, spammers, music players, casual conversations, pissed off guy, troll guy, the solicitor, the leader, the drunk guy, and many more. I mainly lurked but some of the most humorous moments I have had had been of me eavesdropping on conversations. Skella Edited: Jun 19 at 5:01:00 PM Permalink THINK about it this way, you can fly by some dude, blow up all of the enemies he's fighting with one rocket or something, call the dude a -blam!-, and ride off into the sunset. Jokes aside, I really want proximity chat Edit: looks like I can't say that word, but it rhymes with baggot ------------------------- It COULD foster teamwork, It COULD be a positive thing, It most likely based on every other game that has it end up being a cancerous mole that stains the community. If you want to talk to people make the effort to do so, there are multiple methods for doing this in the current build. There is no need for communication on world events, no need to talk to a random I meet in explore, no reason to put this cancerous system in place unless you really want to be able to ruin someone elses experience without going through the effort of using the current systems.
