I haven't had this problem but my plasma is much older than yours (2005). Burn in is typically a problem for the first hundred hours or so which is why the manufacturer will tell you not to watch things or play games that may cause an image to burn in during that breaking in period. And I agree, plasma is still the best picture especially when it comes to true dark.
