It's not bad. But honestly, copying a picture shows no artistic talent at all(this coming from a second year AP apart student). It doesn't show creativity, it shows how well you can look at a photo and copy it exact.

Very interesting debate. Here's my thoughts on the matter: Had I had an actual Vex to come into my home and pose for me I would have gone with that route. Sadly, I don't know any personally. Therefore, I was forced to go with a photo of one for my model. However, just as I would have had to do in real life, I was tasked with taking what I was seeing and transferring it onto a sketch pad in pencil while trying to recreate all of the textures, shapes, colors, lighting, shadows, etc. as best I could in shades of black and grey. While the design itself is not original, the piece I created very much is, and was done so using several artistic techniques. Art is always subjective. Some will call it art. Others will not. Whether you do or not doesn't bother me. It is art to me, and that is all that matters.

And I'm 16 in high school...before you jump to conclusions saying I'm supposed to be an "art student in college" or something. I take an advanced art class, and I'm simply stating what I think. If you just photocopy somebody else's work, it's unoriginal and boring. Even if it's technically well done.

You are free to your opinions I guess, and your work is good as well. However I personally think Benevolent's is better done. Just my opinion.

Where does it say that all "art" shows creativity? If you are truly an art student, you need to study a lot harder than you currently are.

He did well at looking at a photo and copying it. Maybe if he made his own design for a vex, but seeing as it's A) somebody else's work B) on a blank page not really doing anything It's not impressive. Sure, it's technically well done, but as a piece of art it's unoriginal and boring.

I do agree with your comment to some degree. Art is an expression of creativity therefore the OP isn't necessarily "art", BUT it does showcase some good craftsmanship skills which I believe should be acknowledged. A copy can be art but it depends on how you do it. If you use a grid like the OP did, you are only showing you're rendering and observation skills. If you don't use a grid, then you show skills like proportion, depth, composition, rendering etc.

But copying is an excellent first step. If you can't draw what you see with your eye, you can't draw what you see in your mind.

I understand that. But as I said, it's a good stepping stone. If you can't recreate something you see in front of you, you can't create original art either. Just as writers do a lot of reading and studying other writer's styles before finding their own voice, and just as photographers spend a lot of time trying to recreate effects in other people's photographs on their way to defining their own craft, artists often copy other artists while learning how to create their own art. I'm not saying this is art. I'm saying this is an excellent drawing, and the skills shown in this drawing are invaluable to an artist who wants to create hyper-realistic drawings. He's well on his way.

I disagree. I think it shows great artistic talent. Why do you think some art classes have you draw a model? You're just copying what's in front of you, but by doing so you display your understanding of proportions, light, hand control, etc.

That's not all you're doing. Plus, the point I'm making, that model isn't somebody else's piece of art.

The point I'm making is that he shows great artistic talent. Do you think animators draw their own creations? You still have a lot to learn if you think showing technical skills isn't artistic talent. And you might want to start thinking about what practical applications your art skills will have in the professional world. I can tell you that more times than not, the disciplined and technically skilled will have good paying jobs, the "creative" ones will make really cool art in coffee.
