It's rational, risk vs reward and efficiency. Everyone who values their time wants to take the shortest path to success, and since this game breaks that model with random rewards (to extend short core game play), people are inclined to cheese. Personally, I'm not ashamed to admit that I've done it both ways and prefer non-cheese, but I get why people choose to.
