Took me a while, but I found it, Mark of Contention: "The mighty Thalor was invincible in the crucible-until Dredgen Yor, and his Thorn."

We know that Dredgen Yor was a master in the Crucible before he murdered Pahanin thanks to the Cloak of Dredgen Yor, so he could have just overthrown the reigning champ at the time. Again, it's all pretty vague, so it's hard to say for sure what happened. That's some really cool info though, thanks for the reference.
