Also the awoken was most likely created during the great battle and was infused with both light and dark. This could explain why the awoken queen was able to usurp the house of wolves and the entire race able to live on he edge of darkness and light. A group of them most likely went back to earth to protect the traveller/city creating which could have been controversial thus creating a schism between the reef awoken and earth awoken. The awoken may believe that the traveler may have betrayed them or ignored them and thats why the awoken from the reef do not trust the guardians or the last city.
