The only reason i can think of them removing materials for marks is to stop people from transferring marks from one char to another by first trading marks for materials on one char then moving those to another char and trading for marks....but if you have a 5:1 rate for materials:marks that'd seem like a poor trade. I've never used my materials for marks but i don't have a problem with people being able to do this if they have too many resources.
