It makes no sense to use your primary for up close encounters, that is the purpose of shotguns. Shotguns only make sense when you are getting dropped on. Otherwise for all your mid range shooting, use a good primary. Heavy weapons are good to get a quick increase in kills when your team is behind. Otherwise I agree that a good primary & grenade should be your main weapon so you can be effective at keeping the control points.
