Love the idea of a BLACK engram and the art looks amazing. Don't care for the story at all because it just sounds like another way to obtain a missive. Here's what I think would be interesting.
Take the engram to the Cryptarch and he decrypts it into a dark weapon and if you equip it YOU CANNOT UNEQUIP IT until you have cleansed it by various means which then turns it into an exotic weapon.

Imagine if it was a cursed or hexed item that dealt damage to you while equipped you'd have a constant life or energy drain. The only way to cleanse it is to use it to get kills while it is equipped. Maybe even have Xur sell something that negates effects of a curse weapon for 30minutes.
