Killing the non strike mobs is how I regain my spent heavy ammo, so I'll continue to do just that guys.

You're the first one to mention this. I do like wiping the vex before the Nexus strike (open starting area). Then, I have free heavy ammo for the first darkness zone... Can't believe no one else mentioned that!

Because if they've run a few strikes in a row, they already have heavy ammo :P but yes, even if it's just those two hobgoblins, I tend to kill them for the ammo drop
