Because the fools out front skipping half the mobs which I later catch up to before they get to the Boss do still usually kill several enemies at the gated areas they're forced to and I get no chance of a drop off of them if I'm not near them. It's just like the Loot Cave, if you're not standing within a certain distance from the person that gets the kill there's nothing dropped for you.
