True you don't... but you'll hit a wall when you get to the final perks of the gun and don't have anything to help. In addition, weapon and armor lvling goes faster the more you use it (weapon) and get damaged (armour).
So you are passing over a small aid in item lvling... but again, unless you have the requiered materials for the final upgrades, you hit a wall in no time.

Or leveling up vanguard, since now they give you shards and energy. Or doing your dailies for them. Or doing public events. Point is if you need shards, killing everything in a strike for that occassional legendary isn't all that efficent.
