Car people of the Flood: starting car?

Looking at buying my first real car at the end of year, taking advantage of sales of older models to make room for new ones. This'll be the car I move across the country and start my post-college life with, so not some Craigslist beater for two grand. One of the only features I'm really keen on is a hatchback; I like to dive, bike, hike, etc., and having easy access to gear is really useful. Preferably a 4-door, though I'm not really picky about that. I know next to nothing about cars, but I know there are plenty on here that do. Hook a turkey up, Flood. Budget is around $15,000.

Dude, if you bike, hike and do all the crap i do ( along with transporting a 12 foot kayak), get a truck. Not a gas guzzling Hemi like i do, but a small one. A used Tacoma with decent mileage can be easily had on your budget. Heck , even a decent Pennstar V6 Ram Quad cab would work and still get 20-24 MPG. MDS Hemi's are approaching that mileage as well with 390 HP. I bought a 2007 Quad Cab Ram with an MDS Hemi in excellent condition for 12k back in 2010. Getting a 2011-2012 now would be comparable. If you're dead stuck on a car though, look heavily at the Hyundai Veloster. My friend fresh out of college got one and he loves it. His has the 4cyl with a 5/6 spd standard and it's pretty quick. Aside from that, look for a VW GTI.
