Never mind.

It doesn't matter anymore.

Firstly, there are a lot of non-combat options for yourself in the Army if you want to consider their opinion, so don't sweat it. Some MOS' of the the Army are dangerous, but you don't have to be in those. Some (but not many) will even translate to good civilian careers when you are done with your service. Secondly, not to be an ass, but you shouldn't let your family push you around when it comes to matters like these. For example, I let my family push me into the field of Engineering for a good portion of my life. I couldn't be a lawyer because they aren't engineers. I couldn't be enlisted in the Army because they're dumb and not engineers. They kept redirecting me so often that I started thinking I wanted to be one, too. After taking an Introductory Engineering Class in High School, I realized I didn't like it that much to begin with. If you really, really want to be in the Army and are 100% sure of it, I say go for it and see if you like it. Don't let some of these other people on here ruin it for you either. For reference, I am an Army ROTC cadet at the University of Pitt, and a Volunteer Firefighter in my spare time. My majors are Applied Mathematics (Computer Science is my chosen background) and International Relations, and I am also in a certificate program for learning MSA and Egyptian Arabic. My dream after graduating at Pitt is to work in MI. Like you, I also have Military History in my family, but it is quite unorthodox. My Grandfather on my dad's side was a Navy Officer during WW2 after graduating from a Harvard ROTC program, and one of his sons was an Enlisted Air Force member during Vietnam. On my mother's side, my grandfather was Enlisted Army Infantry in Korea and one of his sons an Army National Guard member for quite some time.

      • There are plenty of jobs in the military that have nothing to do with combat, just to ease your moms mind. I think joining the military is a great thing and I think a lot of people would benefit from joining. It would definately cut down a lot of the yolo swaggots.

Well that depends what MOS you are trying to go for. Your moms concern is right if you were going any combat MOS. If you're looking for good experience to carry into civilian life jobs I would join the Navy or AF, even if military were to be your career. I want to join the USMC to build character and to find out what would truly define myself. I have failed the ASVAB twice, will retake soon, but at the same time I feel like the USMC would not benefit me when I get out. Hats off to you though!

          • Family never want you to go to such dangerous occupations, but unless they want to support you for the rest of their lives, they really have no ground. I'd say go for it, it's an amazing opportunity. Everyone else's opinion won't really matter much to you if you join anyway. Once you realize just how blindly fortunate the civilian population is, you'll grow to abhor them.

          • I would go to college first and then join as an officer. You can join ROTC and be in a sorta way while you study. The reason I say this is that you have many more options as an officer over an enlisted.

No point in joining the army. The governments use their soldiers to fight false wars. They don't care about you.

            • Well, I'm going to college and doing the AFROTC program so I can go into the Air Force as an officer, which I feel is a more economically sound route. First, take your ASVAB and then decide which branch to go in because Army isn't necessarily the best depending on your intellectual strengths.

            • It's your choice now and remember your family will be the most biased sources of information you can ever get when it comes to the military. Ask a few of your closest friends, see what they think.
