Yes, the Necromancer is shown as a living shadow throughout the film. [spoiler]However, things change once Gandalf finds him. In an excellent scene, Gandalf's magic is overpowered by the Necromancer. Once Gandalf is defeated, the shadow forms Sauron's flaming figure, which turns into a silhouette of unholy darkness forming the pupil of the flaming Eye of Sauron.[/spoiler]
