Except the only consequence was an easily-avoidable ban. It takes all of 5 minutes to set up a new account, and if you were dedicated enough you could have several in reserve to avoid the 24-hour probation. And even that was only when a mod happened to notice your post and took the time to punish you, which wasn't that often.
