Exotic vs Normal weapons
Just shy of a week ago Bungie gave us our first glimpse at Destiny. During the 15 odd minutes of game play Joe picked up the "Thunderlord", which is an exotic weapon. Joe then proceeded to look at how he weapon could be upgraded. As I was reading on the forums many people seemed disappointed that the weapon had a very linear upgrade path, opposed to an upgrade tree. This had me slightly disappointed as well, so I came up with a reason as to why the upgrade path was so linear: the gun is exotic.
I think it may be possible that exotic guns can only be upgrade a certain way, while normal guns will allow for more diverse paths to be taken. The reason I think this is because exotic guns already have an established history to them, whilst a normal gun that you bought in The Last City has only began its journey and its history needs to be written.
All exotic weapons will be identical, but your favourite and most used weapon will be the only one in the whole solar system.

Keep in mind that many things are bound to change, and there is probably longer chains of upgrades for different exotic weapons. For all we know, Bungie might have been teasing us by just presenting a few of the upgrades.

And if normal weapons can have color customization and modular customization, I'll definitely be using those for most of the game.

In their latest episode it was confirmed that, that skill branch you saw for the Thunderlord was just One of the few/or many that are available. There are multiple skill paths you can take can, and so your Thunderlord can be different to other people's Thunderlords. But I assume these paths are kept similar to some extent, in order to preserve the theme of the weapon.

2 Rispostedont know if you guys saw this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYv6eiokRIE Not sure if normal weapons can be upgraded. if you watch the video youll notice that while thunderlord when he hovers over it has press triangle to upgrade, but the other weapons do not. So at this time I'm not sure if they can be upgraded who knows.

7 RisposteExotic weapon cannot be upgraded by any way you cannot change any part of it compared to a "normal" weapon that is why they are called exotic. They said it in the first presentation by IGN by interview in March/April. Thunderlord is not the best exotic weapon you can find in Destiny do not worry it is a low-lvl exotic weapon, exactly the same as every single other game.

I think that white weapons will have color customization but weapons that already have a color like the thunderlord won't.

3 RisposteI thought every gun you get from loot is unique and random anyway, even if it's the same gun. they were on about how the weapons were made in chunks so that parts could be seperately generated in loot. Maybe it's the same with the upgrade tree, some parts may be different to someone else that has the same gun.

9 RisposteWe arent sure how many classes of guns there will be, they go by color and name yes but we arent sure what types there will be, obviously we know normal guns,exotic guns,and rare guns but guns within those,below or even higher we dont know.. Maybe there will be legendary weapons to which will be better then rare which is better then exotic which is better then normal..

4 RisposteMy take on this is that there are so many weapons that a branching tree is not necessary since you will be changing gear out as you level. So keeping it linear makes the gameplay much more streamlined. This way you aren't sitting there for 15min trying to guess which upgrade is better than the other. They are just making sure that if you want to master a weapon it will be much better then when you started. My guess is the tree comes into play for special abilities. Those are the big game changers from person to person.

Also must consider that there are customizations to attach to each weapon that may not be within the skill tree itself.

I like your view and hope your right, I can't wait to tailor my weapon to my very own story. My trusty LMG "Downpour" will flood the battlefield with the blood of our enemies!! As I "Allos Mason Gran" stand victorious over our many foes

Imo or Exotic it's just another way to say "rare", OR they are weapons with unique effects. Like the Thunderlord, of which last branch of the upgrade tree adds electric element to shots (possibly paralyze, we don't know).

This was my gut feeling as well. But unfortunately we will have to wait for more information. I do hope this is correct though.
