World War 2 Tech! (#8 The Higgins boat!)

After a long hiatus World War 2 Tech and Facts are back! I apologize if you guys missed it and AI promise I will return to a much more stable time table now. Todays tech is short but were just getting started again! The Higgins boat was an amphibious landing craft used by the allies during their many invasions across the pacific, the Mediterranean and European theaters. The Higgins boat was invented by Andrew Higgins (Who would of thought?) who was an American living in Lousiana. The design was influenced by boats that were used to navigate swamps and marshes, its flat bottom design came from that. The Higgins boat could reach a maximum speed of about 9 knots, not the fastest amphibious landing craft in the world, but it got the job done. The Higgins boat could carry 36 men or a platoon size compliment of soldiers. Soldiers would climb down the cargo nets on there invasion ships (Transport ships, LSTs, ETC) and charge down the ramp in front of the ship to get off. This allowed for easy exit under fire, and unfortunately a pretty damn good target for machine guns and artillery... The Higgins boat today symbolizes the invasions of distant shores that partook so often in WW2, while not revolutionary or amazing it got the job done and led the army's of the allies to victory on hostile foreign shores. Picture- U.S. Infantry charge down a Higgins boat ramp during D-day! Thank you for reading and expect more of these tomorrow and in the coming days! As always follow me if you want to keep up with them!
