Way back in vanilla D2, players noticed that in Cabal ships such as The Leviathan, Orobas Vectura, and other Cabal infrastructure like in The Pit lost sector, there are occasionally some rushed ambient whispering noises that appear to say something along the lines of "[?] saw it/what happen(ed)".
There are multiple different instances of this same line, creating further ambiguity regarding the "message". Some these whispers are completely unintelligible, but are still discernible from other environmental ambiance. Usually, some haunting groaning noises (from the ship?) are what follows, which sort of reminds me of Black Fleet ships and the Nightmares.
I remember speculation being that these were anything from all Cabal ships essentially being haunted, to the voices being from The Darkness (ofc witness didn't exist atp), and anything in-between.
Essentially every playable space inside Cabal ships or bases does have these whispers, though they don't always appear the same way.
For example, in Shadow Legions ships, the whispers appear less frequently and often much quieter than they do in places like Red Legion bases.
Well, I thought that this was some sort of subtle lore that was scrapped as the story had progressed, but in Equilibrium, an interesting detail caught my ear.
While these whispers are very infrequent and barely audible throughout the opening areas of both Imperium ships, they become louder and much more frequent as you
approach the Harrow and Dredgen Sere boss arenas. I haven't read much of the lore on these characters, but they are heavily associated with darkness like through the taken and books of sorrow.
Maybe this is nothing still, but I think it could potentially have very interesting implications.
Anyone have a more definitive answer? And are these actually canon?
My best guess (which is a lame answer), is that these voices are just Psion messages that we are intercepting somehow, or maybe even the Psions trying to mess with us.
It is very interesting that the whispers follow you around, both literally and as in "appear to be in your mind", though this might just be a mechanism of gameplay.

2 RisposteI like the idea that it was Psion messages we just happened to "hear", especially since during D2 is when the growing Psion rebellion started showing up in lore.
