I feel this. As bad as Anthem was you could do everything. Why? Match made activities. I get on and do basic crucible, my destinations, my bounties and that’s it. Haven’t even felt the need to do the new stuff bc if I do find a new gun, it’ll be made less optimal after a few months.
But yeah as a solo player I struggle to stay relevant. But then I guess Destiny is geared more towards team based play anyways. Oh well.

When are they making weapons less optimal?

After a few months, some weapons will become un-infuasable. So you can still youse them in situations where power level doesn’t matter but in those ones where power level does matter, well you’ll be handicapping yourself.
