• Narnia to me is a fun way to introduce young kids into the realm of fantasy stories. I read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when I was probably around 12, and then that motivated me to read The Hobbit. Then, Lord of the Rings seemed to be a natural progression with more adult themes and content. So, I'm going to say have cake first and then eat pie? Can we do that here?

  • I refuse to vote because the authors were really close friends. I remember reading that Lewis encouraged Tolkien to write the Lord of the Rings. They also attended a normal party together dressed as polar bears, which is far more important information.

    • This makes me sad. LOtR is the winner but that doesn’t mean the chronicles of marina are bad, they are phenomenal. Just LOtR gets the edge

As a dissent to my contrarian ways of typically posting an opinon and option not listed in the poll, I do admit to voting for JRR here. I've read both, Narnia seried only twice (but "LW&W" more often), and LotR more than few (and The Silmarillion a couple). Conan really isn't the most appropriate thing for me to put up there. It's not really a series so much as it's a collection of stories surrounding a central character that can be read in any order. I remember someone describing them as a tales you'd hear Conan telling in an inn over a mug of ale ("Then there was the time..."), you don't have to have read one to understand another, much less read them in any particular order. They're also of various lengths, next to the actual substance of them, I think that's the big draw for me. I can sit down and read a story that's a few pages ("The Frost-Giant's Daughter"), a few more ("Tower of the Elephant") a full length novel (Hour of the Dragon), or a mid-length novella (Red Nails or People of the Black Circle). And they read fast. Even JRR's poetry & songs sometimes feel like a slog. I never feel that way reading Conan. But, back to my contrarian ways... I'd have to put Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion (not just Elric) multiverse mega-series in the running for top series. While each individual series (Corum, Rlric and The Eternsl Champion) has a particular order, each series can be read independent of one another, in any order.
