I think the romance part would have been criticised and had there been no same sex relationships in the game, I'm sure someone would have brought up some complaint about the under-representation of same sex relationships. But yeah I do agree the poor presentation has drawn in predictably poor responses. But then again if the presentation of the critique was more reasonable, there wouldn't be nearly as many replies here.
