• My New Years Resolution is avoiding micro transactions in paid games like the plague. If I somehow get suckered in to play one without the knowledge of it having them, then I'll just turn off the game. I treat all of them equally. They do nothing for the players except making it more of a grind to get certain items in-game. The "AAA" game industries excuse of it being optional is total -KUPO!!!™-, and should be considered a red flag to gamers.
KUPO!!!™
• Because it depends on things like: •The genre of the game •If it's multi or single player •How invasive they are •Do/Can give an edge in multiplayer •Is the game for younger children •How bad/good the odds are •How difficult it is without buying them However it's largely because it's a popular issue at the moment, and should have been for a while now. They are incredibly predatory, just look at the patents Activision made regarding them. They aren't helping game developers, they're helping publishers. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to stop being a fanboy, and stop servicing the publishers orally.

      • In my opinion, I feel like they don’t belong in games that I’m paying nearly $100 for. If I’m paying that much, I should be able to get anything in the game just by playing. The only place micro-transactions belong is free to play games, where it’s the only way they get any real income from the game.

          • Some people are against certain things, but when things they love are embodiments of those things, they have to make a choice. Either they rescind their stance, ignore the games they like that oppose their stance, or they make some excuse as to why their game is fine. Even I, the great, and humble, magnificent Aifos do this to some extent. Despite all my hatred for lootboxes, I’ll still advertise Skullgirls: Mobile Edition any chance I get, which has lootboxes. But that’s okay, right? It’s free! No. No it’s not. Can’t hate the game, though.

            • I think the main reason why there is so much hate for them if they're done wrong is because of Battlefront 2. EA went so far to where they made gamers realize that they can actually do something about it. This is the main reason why I think #removeeververse exists. Warframe does it right. Buy what you want and it's very possible to get the premium currency without paying a penny.

            • People only feel comfortable to complain when others complain. Going against the grain is now a rarity. Terrible games chalked full of outrageously bad microtransactions are still praised because the general consensus is that those games are good. People tell themselves that it's ok because it's optional & cosmetic, but don't stop to think some dumb kid is wasting their parents cash on some recolored pixels.

              • Its been really iffy But as long as p2w stays out of my $60 games im happy Cosmetics sometimes draw a line. If the game already has good cosmetics in the base game, im for dlc cosmetics (especially if its fan made and the artist gets part of the profit) Although if you pay for something like that, it should be unlimited use (cough cough trashtiny...) Dlc expansions, im usually for being paid if it was worked on separately from the base game (unlike trashtiny....)

                • It depends for me really. A free game that doesnt force them on me and keeps me entertained? Sure. Why not. A gargantuan game thats constantly being worked on and updated by a relatively small studio? Again, I dont mind, especially if I like the direction of the game. When a Triple A game drops a full price DLC where over half of new items are in the section where they try to sell loot boxes? I can see why people take umbrage at that. I think MTXs can be implemented in a fair and forthright manner, and right now I think we're seeing publishers seeing how far they can push the boundaries before they piss people off.

People only care about what affects them, and rarely does it bother them that someone else is bothered. So once it gets to them then they start complaining. Surely you can understand how this will vary between people. A simplified version of how they "pick and choose" which is only the apparent reality it's not the true reality of it. So it's important to note that it sucks no matter what, but people only care or take notice when it's in their neck of the woods. It's understandable to a degree, people are busy.

                        • Because in some cases they are more ignorable/less intrusive, while in other cases a game seems to be built around them.

                          • Because the term micro transactions can have many variations and definitions

                          • I think what you're seeing is different people only bitching about the games they care about. Not into micros myself, think they're detrimental to players, but I'm not going to go out of my way to bitch about the post purchase revenue model for (random example) Watch Dogs 2. I didn't play Watch Dogs 2, don't have an interest in those games, but I'll bitch about R6 or Fortnite or Battlefront 2, because I either play those games or want to play them or care about their franchises. But that's only me, if you seek out the communities of any game with any kind of microtransaction model, you'll find people who bitch about it. I think you're just not finding them, or if you want to find them you aren't looking hard enough.
