Let's face facts: Destiny 2 is a $60 expansion. Sure, there's graphical overhauls, reputation changes, subclass changes, and clan integration, but outside of the new story content, doesn't really justify a brand new game, more like a free update. Let's rewind to 2015... Destiny: Year One, a tumultuous time in Destiny's life. Story was lacking, content was pretty barebones, and the end game was shit. Then, The Taken King came. With an overhauled leveling system, more destination activities than just patrols, more story, and one hell of a lore dump. Bungle proved that Destiny could go through a pretty big change with a simple expansion. This was followed up by Rise of Iron, which felt like a small step back in terms of overall content. While the story was good, it felt like a big step back from The Taken King. It was also the first and only expansion not to be released on last gen consoles. I believe that Destiny 2 should instead have been a major expansion along the lines of The Taken King. Destiny: The Red War. An update would improve the visuals and bring all the other changes Destiny 2 has made over the first one, and would have been available to all players for free. The expansion itself would have been $25 or $30, and added in new gear, new raid, new destinations, new story, etc. Sadly, that didn't happen. What we have now is a game that took one step forward, and two steps back. With a focus on more casual gamers (which means stupid apparently, according to bungie), subclass diversity has suffered (dumbed down) along with end game, PvP (IB or Trials level advantages disabled, really?), and overall content. Casual gamers aren't stupid, they just don't have time for hours of grinding. Does that justify a dumbed down subclass sytem? No, god -blam!- no. What we have is a game that is suffering and struggling to find itself in it's first year, just like it's predecessor. TL;DR: D2 could have easily been an expansion, with a free update that contained everything not directly related to the story content.
