I actually found, what I think, is the way the infection is transmitted.
When the infected player dies. The nanites kind of float in the place where the players head was. If you walk into the swarm, you will be infected. They only stay there for 5-10 seconds then they disappear, or maybe when the Guardian response.

Yeah, tired it with a random from the forums. And nothing worked with trying to.pass it to him. He finally got infected when we were just standing around thinking of what to do next. Lol

Ok so technically it is possible to get another infection but we don't know the method, or its random

We found that it happens each and every time. But since we were passing all 5, we couldn't test it after one try.

It can be a bit hard to see when in brightly lit areas, but this is what happens.
