Has everyone read the story line going with it? To me, it's the answer to why we can't go down into the city, plain and simple. We can't infect the population do they store us in the Tower or out in the wild.
Also it's a buff to get people to play.
Although it looks cool for awhile, I sure hope it disappears come Tursday, getting annoying to me.

Don't quote me on this but apparently in the grimoire, guardians are known for going to the city and even the bars down there. So we do go to the city in the lore but not in the game because bungie didn't make it possible. Guardians are not allowed into the city now because they don't want it to spread to civilians. Just a quarantine until the vanguard learn more about the tech mites.
