I believe you get better by playing more skilled people. I have a friend who is horrible at pvp but she's gotten better because she always doing crucible with me. That being said she always goes against people my level ( I'm average with elo of 1700, and 1.3 kd) which makes her a better player with some coaching. So dont avoid playing with you're friends, unless you don't want to become a better player that is.
