Having your console wired doesn't give you more speed if you pay for less. Let say you pay for 24MB of download speed an your getting 19-23MB over WiFi then your good no matter what. But those who pay for that extra-extra mile (1Gig+) will probably need to have the console wired due to having soo many connected devices (what else whould he be pay lots? Xxx, torrents or worst)...for must users they might a Smart Tv, Roku Box, Apple TV, Amazon TV, Google Nexus Player, Smartphones or MagicJack that runs update whike in sleep mode. Note: If you have wanna of those "Time Warner" router/cable combo box then your internet will suffer even if it's wired! Mostly cause some channels HD automatically opt-in to HD or 1080 even for youtube or netflix on those Smart TV's or set top boxes.

  • The bottleneck of anyones network is always the connection to the ISP. As long as they get 2 up then this will still work to minimise lag on the LAN and optimise the apps and devices on the LAN WiFi has its place but even the new AC protocol is still based on a signal and signals can be distorted to any degree by any electromagnetic source. TCPIP just does a better job of covering lost packets and slowdowns in the signal. Online PvP games are not on the WiFi list

  • Agreed. As a 20 year veteran of IT, his post points out a lot of best practices. Wired=more stable than WiFI? Yes. WiFi, when built well (using decent equipment)? Works just as well. Not everyone grasps the stupid nuances of networking (even on a home LAN), and giving general advice that wired is better than wifi for stability is a good generalization.....and those of us who are geeks understand how to keep a wifi network tuned so it is as good as wire. Most of us are not interested in the details of how it all works (personally...I turn the key on my car, and expect the engine to start....not knowing the intricacies of how a combustion engines works). Sorry....long rant. Anywho.....this is damn good info for those that are not network specialists, and just want to have a good experience playing online.

  • Even if you "tune your wifi" (which I presume you include being aware of all of your cell phones, tablets, appleTv/Roku/etc, smartTv, Hue bulbs, IoT devices, etc that compete), you can't control the fact that you are working in unlicensed spectrum that has pollution in it -- unintentional (non-WiFi) or contributions from all of your neighbors.

  • It is more stable that's all.

  • If you have a shitty router... you should just connect directly to the modem... don't blame wireless if you have a $30 router..

  • I would assume 90% of the players have a $30.00 router!
