On the one hand, there are times it's necessary or, at least, highly advised (reporting on troop movements/locations, showing an execution on the news when children may be watching or showing in-detail construction of a bomb in a movie). On the other hand there are clearly times where it's wrong (silencing a dissenting opinion or covering up corruption). While there are some definite black and white cases, there's a huge gray area where it's not entirely clear. McCarthyism is a great example. It doesn't matter whether it's true or not; once an accusation is made public, an individual's reputation can be ruined forever. There're also issues like doctor-patient confidentiality or attorney-client privilege. Censorship, while largely wrong, is a necessary evil. It is often abused and used as a means of control over the masses but sometimes it's the better option.
