Microsoft wanted more Halo games and Bungie wanted to work on something else (Destiny). So they finished their contract with Microsoft and parted ways.

That still doesn't change the fact that the original deal, between Bungie/Activision and Microsoft, was to release Destiny on the Xbox consoles first. Essentially the timed exclusive content was reversed in the beginning but only with the entire game.
