Actually, there was a reference to Master Chief in the grimoire or game. It's something like "Before I found you, I found a Titan in a Colony Ship. He rejected becoming a guardian, and said he had seen enough war for a lifetime."

It's in game. Ghost says it's just "a guardian of exceptional light", didn't outright state his class. But poor form there, John. You'd have beaten the Darkness and restored humanity in just a few months...
