I had started the thorn bounty but never finished it took a 6 mth break from destiny, when I came back TTK had dropped and I had thorn even though I never completed the bounty, is this a known thing?

Yeah cause bungie got rid of the bounties and said anyone holding them will automatically complete it and receive the weapon.

When the Taken King came out all exotic bounties were automatically finished
